A quick Update

Why do all my recent blog posts seem to start out with an apology for not posting recently? well, heck, why change a good thing? {{insert heartfelt apology}}. So it’s summer and I’ve been crazy busy. Interning at Orlando magazine and chaffeuring the kiddos from camp to camp. Next step on the Lily road to becoming a productive member of society is to take portfolio review (I dropped it this semester to be more present in the kid’s lives), complete said porfolio and work on creating an online presence. Hopefully all these activities will help land me an in-house graphic design position in the near future.

Working at Orlando magazine this summer has solidified my confidence in my design skills and made me realize that I chose the right field. I would love to find a similar position designing for a magazine. I’m not sure Orlando is the best place to be looking but I’m hoping for the best.

Anyway, that’s where I am now. Hopefully my next blog post will be a little heavier on the content and lighter on the self promo

What’s for dinner tonight

As I was driving to and fro tonight. I happened to catch the recipe for Beef roast with roasted onion sauce recipe on one of my local radio stations, Mix 105.1. I was headed to target (can’t go a few days without a Target fix ya know) so I picked up the fixins’. Roast is all prepared and ready to throw into the oven before I head to class.

Beef Roast With Roasted Onion Sauce
Yield: 6 to 8 servings

4 pound boneless beef round rump roast or beef brisket, flat cut

12 large garlic cloves, peeled

2 medium Spanish onions, halved, thin sliced

1 cup water

Seasoning:

1 large clove garlic, crushed

1 1/2 teaspoons paprika

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon dry mustard

1/2 teaspoon pepper

1. Heat oven to 350 F. Combine seasoning ingredients. Press into beef.

2. Line a shallow roasting pan with heavy-duty aluminum foil, extending the foil beyond the sides of the pan to enclose beef. Arrange half of the onions and garlic in pan; place roast over vegetables and cover with remaining onion and garlic. Carefully pour water around roast. Bring up foil flaps and crimp edges to seal. Cook 4 to 4-1/2 hours or until beef is fork-tender. (Be careful of steam when unwrapping foil.)

3. Remove beef; keep warm. Strain pan juices, reserving both liquid and solids. Puree garlic and half of remaining onions in a food processor. Add 1 1/4 cups cooking liquid through feed tube with motor running. Put pureed mixture in a bowl. Stir in rest of sliced onions.

4. Carve beef into thin slices. Serve with onion sauce.

Goddess of Love by P.C. Cast

What happens when the goddess of Love comes to earth and tries to reform a woman not meeting her potentio? Add in a Goddess’s loveless marriage and a hunky fireman and you get lots of mayhem and complications. Not one of P.C. Cast’s best books but still an enjoyable albeit silly book. A very fun, light read with just a touch of the mysticism P.C. Cast uses in all her books.

Striped invaders!!!

Our butterfly garden has finally born fruit—well caterpillars anyway. Overnights the milkweed leaves are disappearing. Victims to hundreds (ok maybe 30 or so) fat wiggly stripey caterpillars. Never thought I’d be so happy to see bugs in my garden. My handy dandy butterfly reference tells me that soon the fat invaders will turn into lovely monarch butterflies. I love gardening. I also love that my kids are as invested in the whole gardening thing as I am. Tyler actually put down his dsi long enough to join me in the caterpillar count.

An obsession with dirt

Every year when the weather takes a turn for the warm (no, it’s not always warm in florida) this girls heart heart begins to think about planting. Every year I say I’ll just buy an herb or two and every year it turns into an obsession. this year I decided to plant my usually herbs (in pots) but I also got a wild hair up the wazoo to plant a butterfly garden. I started it in a sunny corner of our yard and filled it with all kinds of blooming butterfly attracting goodness. Now that we are finally in the rainy season it is growing like gang busters. Of course, I’ve only seen one or two buttterflies but I’m still hopeful. We do have a ton of dragonflies. I just need the dragonflies to pass the word on to their butterfly buddies.

Being me, I couldn’t leave it at that. I also had to buy a new orange and banana tree. The banana went in a giant pot I inferited from the inlaws.

See, here’s the thing, our yard is cursed. With the exception of one corner, nothing grows in the ground. I put in this lemon tree 4 years ago. It’s grown about an inch. This year I turned to the experts at Lukas nursery about our toxic yard. They suggested adding gypsum to our clay soil and lots of fertilizing for existing trees. I took their advice and my sad little lemon tree has some new sprouts and even a few lemons.

I planted this avocado tree at the same time as the lemon. You can see it’s doing just a little better. I’m convinced that there’s a dead body planted in this corner of the yard providing fertilizer. Last year we even had avocados (just five but it’s a start).

With my new knowledge and a bag of expensive soil to amend our nasty clay I decided to try a few plants in the ground. To that end I planted an orange tree, blueberries and a raspberry bush. Stay tuned to see if my amendments bear fruit (pun intended).

Holy cow, it’s been so long since I posted that I forgot my password. Anyway, here’s a little holiday cheer courtesy of Madison. This little phone call led to hours of freaking out because the grownups weren’t in bed yet (for obvious reasons). I think she finally passed out about 2 am. We had to pretend to go to bed so that we could eventually sneak out and take care of grown up christmas eve business (get your minds out of the gutter). We finished just in time to catch Tyler creeping out to see if Santa came. needless to say, mommy and daddy didn’t get much sleep!

Sorry that these are coming out sporadically. This one uses three stacked photos. I find I’ve been arranging my pics this way alot lately. I like how it tells a story. This layout started with the Technique Tuesday frames and kind of evolved from there.
