Meet our new baby!

A few weeks ago we had to put our 19 year old pup, Atilla to sleep.  He lived a long, wonderful life but we were so sad to let him go.  I swore we were done with dogs.  As much as we loved Atilla, at the end he rarely made it outside and I was looking forward to a nice clean house.  No more cleaning up accidents, no more doggy drool on the toilet, no more hairballs.  Then one day it hit me like a ton of bricks, I wanted a puppy.  Forget that we may have to move back to California for Neil’s job, forget the crappy economy, forget my nice clean house, I needed a little ball of puppy scented love.  Well, oddly enough Neil was completely against it.  I’m not going to lie, that probably made me want it more.  After my sobbing “when do I ever insist on anything” speech he sort of gave in.  I fell in love with a Puggle at the pet store.  Well, instead of the Puggle we wandered over to the nimal rescue at PetSmart and came home with a 20 pound mutt of a dog.  Officially, he’s a lab, cattle dog mix.  He started out named Max but after much family discussion (ie arguing) we settled on Dante.  So here he is…….He’s an amazing dog……crate trained, housebroken, he walks without pulling and doesn’t run away. He’s the jackpot of puppies.  A full grown dog in a large puppy body.  He does chew a little but he’s easily redirectable.  The cats are pissed but all in all he’s settling in nicely.

Project 365 Day 26-29

Day 26 Eating Light

Trying to eat healthier this year. This is one of my favorite lunches. Tuna on a bed of lettuce and tomato with a balsamic vinegar kicker and some grapes on the side. Yummy, healthy and filling

 

 

 

 

Day 27 ouch

Whenever I cry I get a really bad headache. After a particularly emotional day which included a fight with a good friend my head was pounding. A cool washcloth always seems to help a little.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Day 28 A little love

Nothing says love more than a heart sculpted in pizza dough courtesy of Tyler. We were at Macaroni Grill for dinner. The kids get a wad of dough to entertain themselves with.

 

 

 

 

Day 29 A little pampering

Normally I wouldn’t condone an almost nie year old getting highlights but it’s all Madison wanted as her prize for getting a good report card. She just got a few in front and it was a one time thing so I’m not going to feel all guilty about promoting beauty over substance.

Colorado day 2-Breckenridge

We finally got up into the mountains today and I think the title of this post should be underestimated.  That’s exactly the word that went through my mind about 12 times.  I’ll add the pics in a separate post. 

First I underestimated how dangerous driving into the mountains can be.  I wasn’t driving but it was scary enough from the backseat.  things weren’t too bad until we hit the higher elevations and white out conditions.  The sheer drop offs so close to the road and the towering red rocks gave me plenty of opportunities to ponder my own mortality and that of my children. 

I also underestimated exactly how cold sub zero temperatures really are.  Usually I don’t mind the cold but it wasn’t a matter of just dealing with it.  At one point I took off my gloves to faciitate picture taking.  After about ten minutes I felt muscle deep pain.  Not just cold but searing pain.  It got worse after I went inside and began to thaw.   It was definitely a not so pleasant introduction to the dangers of cold weather.

One of the things I really underestimated was the majestic beauty of the scenery.  Scenic, breathtaking, spectacualr…none of these words really express how truly beautiful newly fallen, pristine snow really is.  I took a million pictures that just don’t do it justice.  I feel like a yong child meeting Mickey Mouse for the first time.  I just keep wandering from window to window staring at the icicles and snow topped trees….amazing.  I think the family thinks I’ve lost my mind because I keep gushing about the snow.  Do you know that it really sparkles in the sun.  I thought northerners just made that up to make us southern types jealous.

Underestimation #4–Living in the mountains is seriously inconvenient.  You can’t just walk outside for a breath of fresh air, you have to put on two pairs of pants, a heavy jacket, thick socks, gloveves, hat, mittens, etc.  By the time you get all that crap on your forget why you wanted to go out in the first place.  I don’t know how people do it, day in, day out. 

Underestimation #5–a little thing know as hig altitude sickness.  What I like to call I feel like shit and it sucks.  Apparently symptoms include shortness of breathand headaches which I expected.  What I didn’t expect was the nausea and inability to sleep.  Not fun.  Hopefully I’ll get acclimated pretty quickly. 

Underestimation #6–how misleading the depth of snow can be.  I decided to walk from the back yard to the front and found myself up to my waist in powder.  After panicing and flailing a bit I was able to backtrack and work myself out but I did not love the feeling of helplessness.  Now I know not to go out by myself.  If I had stepped in over my head I don’t know what I’d do.

We’re off!

After a hectic morning of opening gifts we’re off to Breckenridge for a chilly ski holiday.  I broke my leg skiing in college so I’ll probably be enjoying cocoa in the ski lodge but the kids are going to have their first taste of skiing and snow.  I am so excited to see their faces when the white stuff drops from the sky.  the forecast in colorado is for snow the next few days and temps in the teens  (brrrr).  I have my laptop with me so I’ll be able to blog on the fly.  I am looking forward to finally having snow pics of my own to post.

This weeks sunday sketch has been preempted for a little Gator pride.  Plus, i’ve been too busy with finals to do a sketch.  I am going to try to get one done tomorrow.
